Chores that fit from age three
What a child can manage alone, and what just becomes frustration for both of you.
A child given a chore it can't reach doesn't learn responsibility. It learns that chores are something you fail at.
From age three
Putting laundry in the basket. Putting shoes away. Tidying one toy at a time, not the room. The chore has to be finishable.
From age six
Setting the table, emptying the dishwasher, packing the bag the night before. Now they can handle a chore with several steps, as long as the steps are the same every time.
The teens
Here the problem is rarely that they can't do it. It's that no one agreed on who does what. A shared list makes the disagreement visible before it becomes a fight.
When someone has to see it's done
A chore can require confirmation from an adult before it counts. Use it sparingly. It's useful on what has to be done properly, and wearing on everything else.
